The rest of the EU bullying Ireland into doing strict regulatory-enforcement they didn't agree with is certainly an interesting & seemingly accurate plot of this situation.
Right now there is no legal way for the EU citizens to be connected to anyone else on the planet. That's the EU being idiots. They are only enforcing this against hated Big Tech companies right now. And these companies will likely eventually have a viable path forward as US-EU data relationships eventually create a framework. But the EU citizens have no way to connect with any other countries right now.
The EU looks like ignorant asshats here. They have made interconnecting impossible, created a horrific no-possible-way-forward doom. Declaration of Independence of Cyberspace grade stuff, nations proving their vast irrelevance.
Dear CEPA, you are on a fast-track in losing your credibility.
"The ruling created a mess. It didn’t take into account that European spy agencies do as much or even more spying on their own populations the US does, and that in the wake of Edward Snowden’s revelations, the US has enacted reforms of its intelligence gathering."
The good 'ol spying game whataboutism argument.
"To their credit, the Biden Administration and the European Commission recognize the danger and have agreed on a new transatlantic data deal. It would establish a new US Data Protection Review Court that would allow European citizens to file claims if they believe their data was collected in violation of GDPR rules."
It is almost certain that also the new pact will be struck down, as no real reforms have been done in the US. The recent revelations show that you have also some big domestic issues with FISA and other laws.
"Upset about the GDPR enforcement mess, the EU seems to be learning. For the new Digital Services and Digital Markets Acts, the Brussels-based European Commission will take the lead, although national regulators continue to play a potentially divisive role."
This I can agree with.
"This will be costly -- and threatens the viability of a global democratic Internet, divorcing the European Internet from the US Internet."
And you conclude with the usual pitch about the global Internet. How is the TikTok case proceeding?
